Drum Tip - Buying Drums
Drum Tip - Drum Heads
Drum Tip - Drumsticks

Now we will talk about Drum Heads. There are so many different ways of manufacturing heads. The best thing about having all these choices is that you can take almost any drum kit, even a very cheap kit, and make it sound good with the right head and the right tuning.

Clear, single ply drum heads produce an open sound with lots of sustain. A very popular single ply head is the Remo Ambassador. These heads are great for live playing situations when you want the drum to be loud, but be careful using these on cheaper kits as they will produce "ring" when you play them.

Two ply drum heads are good for hard hitters but also they can give your kit a warmer, shorter sound with less ring. These are great for making cheaper drum kits sound better.

Some drum heads have built in mufflers to help dampen the ring of your drums. If you have a drum kit like the Pearl Export Series, try putting on a set of Remo Powerstroke 3 or Powerstroke 4 drum heads if you are having a ring problem. This will help to make the kit sound like a more expensive Maple Set.

Drum tuning is all a matter of personal choice, there is no right or wrong, only what sounds good to you. Never get frustrated with the sound of your drums, there is always a way to make them sound better. Keep experimenting until you find the sound that pleases you!
